In June 1890, Van Gogh painted the church at Auvers-sur-Oise from behind, showing its apse. The Gothic building still stands today, and the painting is among the best known works from his final weeks.
The church appears to twist and sway. Its stone walls are rendered in violet and blue, with dark windows and an orange roof. Behind it, the sky is a rich, almost nocturnal cobalt, though the scene takes place in daylight. A sandy path divides around a patch of grass in the foreground, where a peasant woman in a white bonnet walks away from us. Van Gogh wrote to his sister that the building looked violet against a clear, deep blue sky of pure cobalt.
Striking and faintly unsettling, this work suits a living room or hallway, from a London flat to a country home. Order it as a poster in a choice of sizes. Explore more of Van Gogh’s Auvers works in our collection, and read the final chapter of Van Gogh’s time in France on our blog.
