Van Gogh hoped this painting would bring a sense of calm. He told his brother Theo that the colours should, on their own, suggest sleep. Here is his room in the Yellow House, as it looked in October 1888: pale blue walls, a butter-yellow bed, a scarlet blanket and two rush-seated chairs beside the table.
The floor slopes towards us, while firm, dark outlines show the influence of the Japanese prints he collected. There’s nothing fussy here: a towel on its hook, a few pictures on the wall and a green window left open. It’s easy to imagine this quiet scene in a bedroom in a British home.
This was the first of three versions, painted as Van Gogh waited for Gauguin to arrive. Available as a poster in several sizes, it feels at home in a bedroom. Explore more Van Gogh prints and posters to find complementary pieces, or read about how Arles shaped Van Gogh’s palette in our journal.
