Matisse crops in so closely that the body almost vanishes. All that remains is a pink arm, bent at the elbow and surrounded by areas of red, orange, violet and leafy green. Behind it, a strip of blue is traced with white, rippling lines.
Le Bras dates from 1938, a few years before his paper cut-outs, and you can already see the direction he was taking. Flat expanses of colour, lines scratched into the paint, shapes that register as pattern before figure. It’s a painting poised on the edge of abstraction.
On the wall, it feels more like a modern canvas than an Old Master. We like it in a living room with unfussy furniture, or in a bedroom in need of a little warmth. Choose the size that suits your space, framed or unframed, then see how it sits alongside the other works in our Henri Matisse prints and posters, whether in a London flat or a country home.
To trace the journey from Fauvism to cut-outs, our article on Matisse fills in the details.
