Arles, August 1888. Van Gogh was expecting Paul Gauguin at the Yellow House and wanted the spare room to look its best, so he painted sunflowers, quickly, before the blooms wilted. This is the fourth canvas in the series, yellow upon yellow: flowers, vase and wall, held together by a few lines of blue.
Every stage of the flower is here, from fresh golden heads to drooping ones heavy with seed. He signed it on the vase, simply "Vincent". Gauguin later painted him at work on a sunflower canvas. The National Gallery acquired the picture in 1924, and it still hangs there, on Trafalgar Square.
We print it as a poster in several sizes. It brightens a sitting room or hallway, even on grey days. Find more flowers and orchards among our Van Gogh prints and posters, and the story of the Yellow House in our journal.
