Everything seems to float against the red. A green vase cradles a single white magnolia among the leaves, while a large copper pot hangs behind it like a sun. Around them, Matisse places a lilac jug, a turquoise vase, a pot of blue flowers and a spotted seashell. There are no shadows, and none are needed.
Painted in 1941, the year he underwent a serious operation, the work feels almost like a declaration. The objects sit on the canvas like paper cut-outs, hinting at the direction his art would take. Today, the painting is held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Its landscape format works naturally above a sofa, sideboard or dining table, whether in a period property or a contemporary British home. The red feels warm, not overpowering, helping to bring the room together. Choose from several sizes, with an optional frame. Explore more of his still lifes in our Matisse prints.
