Black fills this painting, yet the mood is far from sombre. In 1916, Matisse was exploring black as a colour in its own right, using it to hold light rather than absorb it. This still life is one outcome of that experiment.
Notice the objects he has brought together: yellow gourds on a plate, a basket, white and green flowers with one red bloom, an ornate object resembling a lantern and, to the right, the profile of a plaster head with its hair pinned up. A window above admits a patch of green, while a yellow frame and pink rug provide warmer touches.
The composition hints at Cubism, though with a gentler feel. We can picture it in a dining room or kitchen in a British home where a little drama is welcome. It’s available in several sizes, with the option of adding a frame. Explore related pieces in our Henri Matisse prints and posters.
