Arles, September 1888. After nightfall, Van Gogh positioned his easel beside the Rhône, a brief walk from the Yellow House, and painted by the light of the gas lamps. Their glow casts long, golden streaks across the river. The Plough sits high in the deep Prussian blue sky, while a couple walks along the bank in the lower corner, almost an incidental detail.
He created this work nine months before The Starry Night, and its mood is more peaceful. There are fewer swirling strokes and a greater sense of quiet. The paint remains thick and expressive, with the yellows seeming to shine against the expanse of blue.
