The same park as Garden with Courting Couples, seen at a different hour. In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh returned to Square Saint-Pierre in Asnières late in the day, as the sky turned golden and the trees darkened against it.
A curved path, painted in pale blue and lilac, draws you into the scene. On either side, rounded trees and bushes take shape in short strokes of green, warmed where they catch the low sun. The sky is washed with yellow and soft orange. There’s a quiet stillness to this summer evening, as people begin to make their way home, much like the parks of British towns at dusk.
