Arles, February 1888. Winter had not yet loosened its grip. Snow covered the fields, while the orchards remained bare. So, like any gardener who could not wait for spring, he cut an almond twig and placed it in a glass of water to flower indoors.
The result is one of his most delicate paintings. A glass rests on a yellow-green table, with the twig rising from it and a handful of pink and white blossoms. The wall behind is pale blue, crossed by a single horizontal red line. In the top left corner, he signed his name in red, almost like a stroke of calligraphy. Japanese prints are a clear influence, from the simplicity and open space to the focus on a single, small detail.
