Van Gogh seldom painted snow. In January 1890, while at Saint-Rémy, he made an exception, taking a print of Millet’s Winter as his starting point. No figures appear in the scene: just a snow-covered field and a harrow resting in the furrows.
Blue and green dominate the palette. Short, horizontal strokes of mint, aqua and white shape the snow, while the pale green sky carries a soft warmth near the horizon, where a village and a solitary tree come into view. The scene feels cold, still and slightly desolate, yet holds an unexpected luminosity.
This print suits a winter-inspired wall, a country retreat or anyone drawn to restrained colour. It pairs well with grey, white and natural wood, whether in a cottage or a city home across the UK. We print it as a poster in a range of sizes. Discover more of Van Gogh’s interpretations of Millet in our Van Gogh prints and posters.
