If you were choosing a Van Gogh self-portrait for its colour, this one would be hard to overlook. His straw hat glows a buttery yellow, set against a flecked background of orange and pink, while a soft lilac jacket adds another note. Warm gold and orange tones run through his beard and skin, too.
Painted in Paris in the summer of 1887, it reflects how much Van Gogh had learnt from the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists, as he began to develop a style of his own. Short, animated brushstrokes trace the brim of the hat and the jacket’s folds. His blue-green eyes offer the one cool contrast to all that warmth, drawing you in at once.
A cheerful, sunlit portrait for a living room, kitchen or hallway, whether in a London flat or a country home. It’s available as a poster in a choice of sizes. Compare it with his other straw-hat portraits in our collection of Van Gogh paintings. You can also follow the colours that shaped his work in our feature on Arles and beyond.
