A straw hat is a sign of summer, and of painting in the open air. In 1887, Van Gogh spent long days working by the Seine and on the outskirts of Paris, wearing a hat like this to shield his eyes from the sun.
Here, it fills the upper part of the portrait like a golden halo, its brim defined by long, sweeping strokes. Below is a weathered face, a sandy beard and a slightly guarded expression. His blue work smock, much like those worn by farm workers, fills the lower part of the canvas. Small dabs of pink, cream and blue create a speckled backdrop.
Blue and yellow, colours he would use so boldly in Arles, are already at the heart of the image. It works well in a bright living room, kitchen or studio, from a London flat to a country home. The poster is available in several sizes. Explore two more straw hat self-portraits in our Van Gogh art collection, and read our article following his journey through France, from Paris to the south.
