The brushstrokes circle his head like a halo, or ripples spreading across water after a stone has been tossed in. Painted in Paris during the winter of 1887–88, this is among Van Gogh’s most accomplished self-portraits, bringing together everything he explored during his time in the city.
He wears a grey felt hat and a dark blue jacket. His face is built from strokes of orange, green and pink, while his gaze feels direct and intent. Short dashes of blue in the background follow the shape of his head, making the entire canvas seem to shimmer around its central figure. He handles complementary colours, from orange against blue to red against green, with remarkable assurance.
A bold choice for a sitting room, study or hallway in a UK home, where you’d like to create a strong focal point. The poster comes in several sizes. Discover more of his portraits in our collection of Van Gogh portraits, and read our article about Van Gogh’s artistic transformation in France.
