What makes this self-portrait so compelling is as much what Van Gogh left out as what he painted. Most of the background remains bare, with its warm brown ground marked by brief blue strokes, like a sudden burst of rain.
The face, on the other hand, is carefully defined: a red beard, piercing blue-green eyes and a forehead caught by the light from the left. His jacket breaks up into a patchwork of rust, green and blue brushstrokes. Painted in Paris in 1887, the portrait shows him taking the Neo-Impressionists’ separate strokes and adapting them to his own far more rugged style.
There’s a freshness here, like a page from a sketchbook, that still feels strikingly modern. It would suit a home office, hallway or creative corner in a British home, where the artist’s gaze keeps you on your toes. Choose from a range of poster sizes.
