Paris, 1886. Van Gogh had just arrived with little money and fewer people willing to sit for him. So he turned to himself as a model. Over the next two years, he painted more self-portraits than during the rest of his career combined.
This is one of his early examples, and you can watch him taking shape in the mirror. His face is still carefully modelled in pink, ochre and a touch of green beneath the eyes. Yet the background is beginning to shift: swirling greens and blues that suggest foliage more than a wall. His jacket is pale grey and white, almost unfinished, while a bright blue cravat gives the eye a place to settle.
A considered portrait for a study or library, or one to display alongside other faces on a gallery wall. Our poster comes in several sizes. You can find all his self-portraits in our collection of Van Gogh self-portrait and painting prints, while our article about Van Gogh in France follows the man in the mirror from Paris to Auvers, with a nod to the character of British homes.
