Seurat and Signac used tiny dots of pure colour, which merge in the viewer’s eye. In 1887, Van Gogh applied their technique to his own face. The result is his closest attempt at pointillism.
The backdrop is a sweep of deep blue speckled with orange, while his coat is formed from threads of russet and plum. Even the skin is made up of separate marks, with pink, orange, green and blue placed side by side. But Van Gogh couldn’t quite stick to dots. Around the eyes and beard, the strokes grow longer and begin to trace the features, hinting at the directional brushwork that would become his hallmark.
His expression is serious, with his gaze turned slightly aside, and the painting has a quiet intensity. It sits beautifully in a library or a room with dark walls, whether in a Victorian terrace or a contemporary London flat. A choice of poster sizes is available.
