This is the last self-portrait Van Gogh painted in Paris, during the winter of 1887–88, just before setting off for Arles. He depicts himself at work, standing behind his easel with a palette full of colour and brushes in hand.
He later described the painting to his sister with striking honesty: a pinkish-grey face, green eyes, ash-grey hair, lines on his forehead and around his mouth, a stiff, wooden expression and a very red beard. Every detail is there. Long brushstrokes shape his blue smock, while the background is a pale grey-blue. At the bottom, his palette offers a small display of the pure colours he had learnt to use in Paris.
This is the portrait of a man reflecting before a fresh start. It suits a workspace, studio or desk in a UK home. Our poster is available in several sizes. Explore the complete collection of Van Gogh art prints, then read our article about what followed in Arles.
