Marcelle Roulin was just a few months old when Van Gogh painted her in Arles towards the end of 1888. Her father, Joseph, worked for the post office and was one of the artist’s closest friends. Van Gogh went on to paint the whole family, including both parents and their three children.
She gazes straight out at us with wide blue eyes, rosy, round cheeks and tiny hands clasped before her. A white bonnet frames her face. Behind her, broad, gentle strokes of pale mint green keep the focus on that serious baby expression. Van Gogh clearly had a soft spot for her, and it comes through in the portrait.
Charming without being overly sweet, this print would suit a nursery or a child’s bedroom, from a London terrace to a cottage in the countryside. It’s available as a poster in several sizes. You can also see her mother, Augustine, in La Berceuse, featured in our collection of Van Gogh portrait posters.
