The afternoon sun strikes the façade full on, and the stone turns gold, cream and orange. The portals glow, the tracery of the towers is lit up against a blue sky, and the shadows have shrunk to thin strokes of blue. At the bottom, a few tiny figures stand at the door.
This is one of the brightest canvases of the Rouen series. When twenty of the façades were shown together at Durand-Ruel's gallery in Paris in 1895, the politician Georges Clemenceau, Monet's friend, wrote that they should be kept together as a single work. They were not, and this one is now in Washington.
Warm and radiant, it lights up a hallway, a living room or a study. Our Monet art prints let you choose the same façade in blue morning, grey weather or full sun. Our article on Claude Monet tells the story. Several sizes.
