On an overcast day, the cathedral loses its colours. The façade becomes a mass of grey, mauve and silver stone, its portals and rose window carved out in soft shadows, its pinnacles merging with the cloudy sky. The paint is thick and textured, almost like plaster.
This is one of the canvases Monet started in Rouen in 1892, on days when the sun did not appear. He later wrote that the cathedral had cost him nightmares: he dreamed it was falling on him, in pink, blue and yellow. This grey version belongs to the Musée d'Orsay.
Sober and powerful, it suits an office, a hallway or a minimalist interior. Our Claude Monet art prints include the same façade in sunlight and blue morning light. Our article on Monet's series tells how he worked in Rouen. Several sizes.
