Not many artists have attempted to capture rain itself. Van Gogh did so in November 1889, gazing from his window at the asylum. The walled field he painted in every season appears here beneath a torrential shower.
Rain streaks diagonally across the entire canvas, like marks on a pane of glass. Beyond it, the field dissolves into greens and greys, the wall forms a pale strip and the hills are scarcely discernible. Van Gogh drew on Japanese prints for the idea, particularly Hiroshige’s work. He had copied Hiroshige’s treatment of rain in Paris two years earlier.
This is a thoughtful, atmospheric piece. It would sit comfortably in a bedroom, a study or any corner of a UK home where you enjoy a touch of melancholy with your morning coffee. The poster is available in several sizes. Prefer the same field beneath clear skies? You’ll find it in our collection of Van Gogh landscapes. Our article about Van Gogh’s time in Arles and Saint-Rémy explores why he returned to that view so often.
