Two copper beeches rise from a meadow like flames. Matisse painted them in 1901, years before he was known as a Fauve. Yet you can already sense the impulse behind his later work: the trees are not quite purple, but a rich, fiery red, applied in thick, swift strokes.
Cool green grass surrounds them, dotted with yellow flowers, while a pale sky shows through the gap between the trees. A dark pine on the left lends the scene a sense of weight. It is a modest landscape, full of energy.
What we love about it:
- the reds sit beautifully alongside wooden furniture and warm textiles
- it has a seasonal feel without becoming a conventional autumn scene
- it reveals a side of Matisse that many people may not know
