A young girl seen in profile, with a neat black bob and an oversized white blouse. Nothing more: no jewels, gold or pattern. The background is almost bare, with just a few soft strokes of cream and grey. The blouse is rendered in quick, free marks of white and lilac.
Helene was the daughter of Klimt’s brother Ernst, who died in 1892. Gustav became her guardian and painted her in 1898, when she was six. Among his most tender and understated works, the portrait also feels strikingly modern in its restraint. It is now held at the Kunstmuseum Bern.
With its gentle, pared-back feel, this print suits a child’s room, bedroom or hallway with pale walls, from a London flat to a country home. Choose from several sizes, with or without a frame. Set it alongside the bold colours of Mäda Primavesi from our Klimt prints and posters collection.
The painter’s family features in our article about Klimt’s Vienna.
