Five years after painting her iconic golden portrait, Klimt returned to Adele Bloch-Bauer. The contrast could hardly be greater. This time, there’s no gold. She wears a long white coat with blue stripes and a broad black hat, set against a wall of pink, green and violet, adorned with small Asian figures and horsemen.
She is the only woman Klimt painted twice in a full-length portrait. This second version, dating from 1912, reflects his growing interest in colour and East Asian art. Following a lengthy restitution case, the painting was sold in 2006 and has since changed hands in private collections.
