June 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise. A year after painting his poppy field at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh returned to the subject, this time with no holding back. Poppies blanket the lower half of the canvas, forming a dense carpet of red dots.
Beyond them lie bands of green and yellow fields, followed by a dark line of trees and shrubs. The sky is far from tranquil: blue, green and white strokes churn above the horizon. Warm earth meets a cool, unsettled sky, while red sets off its complementary green.
We think this print works particularly well in a sitting room or kitchen, where its red tones can bring warmth to British homes. Choose from several poster sizes. If you’re drawn to poppies, our Van Gogh flower and landscape prints also feature the 1889 field.
