Many painters in the 1880s viewed landscapes from afar. Van Gogh, by contrast, crouched down to study the ground at his feet. The result is a small canvas filled from edge to edge with blades of grass.
He painted it in Paris in spring 1887, probably in a park or on the city’s outskirts. Fine upright strokes of green, yellow and blue sit side by side, with a few tiny pink and white flowers breaking the pattern here and there. There’s no traditional subject or focal point. It feels almost abstract, decades before abstraction emerged.
Its contemporary feel is part of the appeal. It works well in a minimalist home, a bathroom or a compact study, whether in a London flat or a country cottage. Choose from several poster sizes.
