April 1889. Van Gogh’s second spring in Arles was a challenging one: after his breakdown, he had spent part of the winter in hospital. Even so, he returned to painting outdoors among the orchards.
In the foreground, several trees with unusual pink trunks stretch over a bright green meadow, dotted with little yellow flowers. Fine white blossom covers their branches. Beyond them, the red rooftops and church tower of Arles appear through the trees, almost like a view behind a curtain.
The layered composition lends the scene a quiet depth, reminiscent of the Japanese prints Van Gogh admired. It suits a dining room or hallway, keeping a touch of spring in your home throughout the year, from a London terrace to a country cottage. The poster comes in a choice of sizes.
