In Provence, farmers plant cypresses in close rows to shelter their land from the mistral. Van Gogh spotted them during his first spring in Arles. In this orchard, painted in April 1888, they form a deep green screen behind the blossoming trees.
A reed fence runs across the foreground. Beyond it, fruit trees laden with white and pink blossom stand on pale ground touched with lilac. The light is clear yet a little hazy; the colours are gentle, almost pastel, apart from the dark cypresses that hold the scene together. This painting speaks of protection and fragility in equal measure.
Quiet and fresh, it works well in a bedroom or a living room with pale walls, including the light-filled interiors found in many British homes. Available as a poster in several sizes, it can be paired with other orchards from the same period in our Van Gogh landscape and blossom prints.
