Light takes centre stage here. Sunlight filters through the olive trees, falling in soft yellow patches on the ground as blue and lilac shadows curl around them. The orchard floor seems to shimmer.
The trees grow close together, their silvery-green leaves picked out in swift, comma-like strokes. A path, or perhaps simply an opening, curves from the bottom left towards the distance. At the edge of the scene, a few red poppies bring a touch of warmth to the cool palette. Van Gogh painted this in 1889, during the months when he repeatedly returned to the olive groves near the asylum. Its shifting light feels at home in everything from a London flat to a country cottage.
- Cool greens and blues lend a restful feel to a bedroom
- The painting shifts with the changing light in your room
- Pairs well with linen, oak and white walls
