Late afternoon, perhaps sunset. The sky has turned yellow and orange, crossed by short red strokes, while the ground beneath the olive trees glows brick red. Against it, the shadows stand out in pure cobalt blue.
Van Gogh wasn’t trying to reproduce nature here. He pushed colour to its limits to capture the heat, the light and the close of a day in Provence. The trees remain solid and rooted, with dark, twisted trunks and rounded crowns of green and blue, while everything around them seems ablaze.
Of his olive groves, this is the boldest we know. It suits a white or very pale wall, where the reds and oranges can take centre stage, perhaps in a living room or dining room. It’s available in several poster sizes. Compare it with the cooler versions in our collection of Van Gogh art prints, and read about Van Gogh’s colour revolution in the south of France. In a British home, it also makes a striking contrast with understated interiors.
