A tall, slender panel shows a woman standing upright, holding a small, round mirror aloft. Above her, in Klimt’s hand-drawn capitals, are words by the poet Leopold Schefer: “Truth is fire, and to speak the truth means to shine and burn.” Beneath, two dandelion clocks sit alongside the Latin title, Nuda Veritas, meaning naked truth.
Klimt drew it in 1898 for Ver Sacrum, the magazine of the young Vienna Secession, with the mirror at its heart. Truth is held up to the viewer. A year later, he developed the idea into a painting with a more pointed message, but we have a particular fondness for this early version: black ink on cream paper, with a few pencil notes still visible in the margins.
It is among the more understated works in our Klimt prints and posters. Its narrow proportions work well in a hallway, on a bedroom wall or above a desk, whether in a London flat or a country home. The poster is available in several sizes, framed or unframed.
