Saint-Tropez, summer 1904. Matisse spent the season by the coast, and this small canvas captures the bay late in the afternoon. A tall pine divides the scene on the right, the distant hills turn blue, and pink and yellow streak the sky above water that appears almost golden.
Look closely at the bottom-left corner. A little figure sits on the reddish ground, easy to overlook. This is the detail behind the title Le Goûter, meaning afternoon snack. Matisse builds the scene from short dabs of pure colour, exploring a technique he was developing at the time. A year later, critics would dub him a wild beast.
