June 1889, just beyond the asylum walls. Van Gogh sets up his easel facing the Alpilles, the low mountain range south of Saint-Rémy, and paints the landscape in long, sweeping bands.
In the foreground, a wheat field is beginning to turn golden. Beyond it, rounded hills in shades of blue and green, their slopes marked by fields and rows of trees. Huge white clouds swell across the turquoise sky, their thickly applied paint giving them an almost sculpted form.
Unlike the more restless views he painted around the same time, this scene feels composed and almost classical. We’d choose a living room or dining room, with enough space to take it in, whether in a Georgian terrace or a modern flat. It’s available as a poster in several sizes.
