A vast black feather boa conceals the lower half of her face. Above it are half-lidded eyes, red hair, rosy cheeks and a broad, dark hat with a purple sheen. At the bottom, a single white glove stands out as the only bright detail in a painting steeped in shadow.
Klimt painted this Dame mit Hut und Federboa in 1909, as his golden period was drawing to a close. Critics often draw comparisons with Toulouse-Lautrec: here, the subject is not a society lady posing for a portrait, but a woman glimpsed in passing, enigmatic and somewhat distant. The painting is held at the Belvedere in Vienna.
