Van Gogh had been reading Pierre Loti’s novel Madame Chrysanthème, which is set in Japan, where a mousmé means a young girl. In July 1888, while in Arles, he borrowed the word for this portrait of a local girl, thought to be between twelve and fourteen.
She sits in a cane chair, dressed in a jacket with red and blue stripes and orange buttons, and a skirt patterned with red dots. She holds a small sprig of oleander. Behind her, a soft, cool green backdrop sets off the mix of patterns. Her expression is serious, with a hint of shyness.
He told his brother that the portrait had taken a whole week to paint, a long time by his standards. The care shows in every carefully rendered texture. Hang it in a bedroom or hallway, whether in a London flat or a country home. Available as a poster in a choice of sizes.
