A young woman in a blond wig turns towards us, smiling, a fan raised in one hand. She wears a heavy red kimono embroidered with a samurai warrior drawing his sword, and the wall behind her is scattered with round Japanese fans in blue, white and red. More fans lie on the straw mat at her feet.
The model is Camille, Monet's wife. He painted this large canvas in 1876, at the height of the Paris craze for everything Japanese, and showed it at the second Impressionist exhibition, where it sold well. Later he called it a piece of rubbish, perhaps because it was so unlike the rest of his work. It now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
