At the foot of the painting, an old man stands naked and hunched, his head lowered. A huge octopus coils its tentacles around him. Three long-haired women look on: the Furies, poised to punish. High above, small and remote, are Truth, Justice and Law.
Klimt completed this, his third painting for the University of Vienna, in 1907. Rather than praise justice, he depicted a man broken by it, much to the professors’ anger. The work was destroyed in a fire in 1945, alongside Medicine and Philosophy. Only a black-and-white photograph remains, reproduced here with all its stark contrasts intact.
A bold choice for a solicitor’s office, study or library, whether in a London townhouse or a country home. Available in several sizes, with a choice of frames. Explore more in our Gustav Klimt collection.
