Her head is thrown back, eyes almost closed and lips slightly parted. Judith wears a gold collar and a sheer dress slipping from one shoulder. At the bottom right, partly cropped by the frame, she holds the head of Holofernes, the general she has just killed.
Klimt painted this biblical heroine in 1901, recasting her as a modern femme fatale: sensual and composed, surrounded by gold leaf. The original frame, made by his brother Georg, bears the title in capital letters: "Judith und Holofernes". Many people in Vienna still took her for Salome. The painting is held at the Belvedere.
A striking golden artwork for a sitting room or bedroom, whether in a London flat or a country home. Order it in a choice of sizes, with or without a frame. Its darker companion, Judith II, features in our Gustav Klimt poster range.
The Secession era, when Judith was first exhibited, is covered in our article about Klimt's Vienna.
