A year after painting irises outdoors in the garden, Van Gogh brought them inside. In May 1890, during his final days at Saint-Rémy before moving on to Auvers, he painted several large still lifes of flowers, including this one.
The flowers spill from an orange-brown jug against a lemon-yellow background. Van Gogh sought the strongest contrast he could achieve: violet against yellow, a classic pairing of complementary colours. Some of the red pigment has faded over the years, making the blooms appear bluer today than he intended. They still stand out on the wall.
This tall-format print makes a strong impression and is easy to hang in a kitchen, hallway or dining room, from a London flat to a country home. It’s available in several poster sizes.
