Van Gogh painted Irises during his first week at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in May 1889. He saw work as a lightning conductor for his illness, and wasted no time heading out into the garden.
The canvas is filled with blue-violet irises, their leaves curling like green flames. A lone white iris on the left catches the eye, and has prompted questions ever since. Behind the flowers, a band of orange earth and a patch of marigolds set the blue tones off. Bold outlines and tightly cropped framing recall a Japanese print.
It fetched a record price at auction in 1987, yet it is the painting itself that continues to captivate: few flower pictures feel so alive. We offer it as a poster in several sizes, well suited to a living room in a London flat or a country home.
