Of all the apartment blocks in our brutalist architecture collection, this one stands on the most unusual legs.
Its upper storeys project over hefty, sloping supports, rather like the feet of a giant animal. Above, ribbed concrete panels, lines of windows and a handful of patched-up frames hint at decades of everyday life. The space beneath the building falls into deep shadow, making the whole structure seem heavier still.
We’re drawn to photographs that show how a building meets the ground. This one scarcely does. The structure looks as though it’s crouching, poised to get up and walk away.
There’s a raw, faintly melancholy mood to it, well suited to industrial interiors, lofts and offices. Against a pale wall, a black frame makes the contrast more striking. This poster comes in several sizes, ready for homes and workspaces across the UK.
Raising buildings on pillars, known as pilotis, was one of modern architecture’s defining ideas. Find out how Le Corbusier’s ideas paved the way for brutalism.
