Five years after Hope I, Klimt returned to the same subject, this time with far more gold. The pregnant woman is now dressed in a long robe patterned with red, gold and black circles. She bows her head as if in prayer, while three women at her feet bow theirs too. A small skull rests against her belly.
A deep olive-gold background, flecked like aged gold leaf, frames the scene. The figure forms a slender column through the centre of the square composition, recalling the Byzantine mosaics Klimt saw in Ravenna in 1903. The painting is now held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
More contemplative and spiritual than the first version, it suits a bedroom or a quiet living room, from a London flat to a country home. Choose from several sizes, with or without a frame. Hang it alongside Hope I from our Gustav Klimt collection for a striking pairing.
Ravenna and Klimt’s golden period feature in our account of Klimt’s Vienna.
