Two stacks of grain stand in a field burnt pale by the sun, a big one in front and a smaller one behind. Their shadows are short and blue, the air shimmers, and behind them a line of trees and the blue hills of the Seine valley fade into heat haze.
This is the very beginning of the series, painted at the end of the summer of 1890 near Monet's house at Giverny, and dated 1891 when it was finished. The original is at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Because the canvas is wide, we print it with a light border so that nothing of the field is cut.
Golden and peaceful, it is a gentle choice for a living room, a bedroom or a country kitchen. Follow the same stacks through autumn and winter in our Monet prints and posters, and read our article on the grainstack series.
