No houses, no figures, barely a tree. Just a hillside covered in young wheat beneath a cloud-filled sky. In Auvers in the summer of 1890, Van Gogh stripped the landscape back to its essentials, creating a scene that still feels remarkably modern.
The wheat sweeps across the canvas in long strokes of green, yellow-green and blue, rippling like water. Overhead, white and lilac clouds curl in thick layers of paint, while a paler strip of green crosses the right-hand side. You can almost sense the breeze travelling over the hill.
Painted during the final weeks of his life, this canvas feels far from sombre. Instead, it offers a moment of calm. We like it in a bedroom or home office, where you’d like a peaceful feel without losing interest. In a British home, its open landscape can offer a welcome pause from the bustle of city life. This poster comes in several formats. Discover more scenes in our collection of Van Gogh wheat field prints, then read about his final summer in Auvers.
