In May 1887, Van Gogh settled in a public garden in Asnières, just beyond Paris, and painted one of the largest canvases of his time in the city. Trees stand in leaf and blossom as couples stroll along the paths in pairs.
His technique is what makes this painting stand out. He shapes the entire scene with short strokes and dots of pure colour, taking inspiration from the Neo-Impressionists but not following their strict approach. The effect seems to shimmer: soft greens and yellows in the grass, lilac paths and hints of pink among the trees. Some interpret the scene as a vision of the calm, settled life he longed for, but never truly found.
With its broad, luminous composition, this work would suit a living room or a bedroom above the bed, from a London flat to a country home. It comes in several poster sizes.
