Two white butterflies drift over a tangle of tall grasses. There’s no horizon, house or sky, only green in countless shades and the sense of lying in a meadow at the start of summer.
While living in the south, Van Gogh painted several close-up studies of wild, overgrown grass. These were unusual subjects at the time, more akin to Japanese prints or botanical illustrations than traditional landscapes. Long, flowing brushstrokes bend this way and that, like stems caught in the breeze, while a few little flowers emerge from the foliage.
- A peaceful scene with a quietly contemplative feel
- Leafy greens that sit beautifully alongside wood and houseplants
- Understated enough for a bedroom or reading corner
