A dense bank of flowers, red, orange and yellow, fills the bottom of the picture and climbs towards the light. Beyond it, the Seine opens up in pale blue and silver, with a small island of dark trees and a rowing boat, and the far hills glow pink under a warm sky.
Monet rented a house at Vétheuil from 1878 to 1881, with a garden that ran down in terraces towards the river. He planted it himself, and in the summer of 1881, just before leaving, he painted it bursting with flowers. The canvas is now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Warm and joyful, it lights up a living room, a bedroom or an entrance. Discover the garden at Vétheuil from other angles among our Claude Monet posters, and read our article on his life to know what those years were like. Several sizes, with or without a frame.
