How on earth does that block stay up? It is usually the first thing people ask when they see this one.
A huge rectangular volume juts out over a terrace, its underside swallowed by deep shadow. Below it, a slim railing crosses the frame, and a tree edges in from the right as if to check the scale. The sky is almost white, so the building looks as though it has been cut out with scissors.
There is very little in this picture, and that is the whole idea. Two or three shades of grey, a handful of straight lines, one heavy shape that seems to hover. It has the calm of a minimalist painting, with a healthy dose of engineering swagger on top.
We picture it in a bright sitting room, a studio or a home office with pale wood furniture, in a London flat as much as a cottage. The portrait format leaves plenty of breathing space around it. It is available in several sizes.
You will find its relatives among our brutalism prints, and if you are curious about why architects were so fond of these daring overhangs, our in-depth look at brutalist architecture explains all.
