In early June 1888, Van Gogh travelled by coach from Arles to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean coast, where he stayed for about a week. One morning, before the fishermen set out, he sketched their boats on the beach.
When he returned to Arles, he used the drawing as the basis for this painting. Four little boats rest on the sand in red, green, blue and orange, their masts intersecting beneath a pale sky. Further out, a handful of sails are already heading to sea. The crisp, confident outlines recall Japanese prints, while the bright, flat colours suggest painted timber warmed by the sun.
A lovely choice for a bathroom, a seaside cottage or a child’s bedroom. The poster comes in a range of sizes. Discover more coastal and rural scenes in our complete collection of Van Gogh posters, and read more about his time travelling around Arles on our blog.
