Near Arles, summer 1888, as the harvest gets under way. A path runs alongside a low stone wall towards a farmhouse with an orange roof and a haystack. A figure dressed in blue walks in our direction, while red poppies speckle the verge.
The colours are close to pure: wheat yellow, turquoise sky and lilac-grey stone. Van Gogh set complementary shades against one another, pairing orange with blue and red with green. His brushwork is loose in the grass and more defined on the buildings, giving the scene a pleasing sense of depth.
- A light, sunlit palette for a sitting room or kitchen
- A peaceful composition that never feels cluttered
- A favourite with anyone who knows Provence in July
